Any whizzer cone model is not truly a full-range speaker, but a two-way speaker where the tweeter cone is glued to the woofer cone. But whizzer cone full-range speakers are still much better than multi-driver speakers with a crossover.

I am driving my full range 4 ohm speakers with my LM GainClone amp and want to add tweeters for those extra highs.

Some of the commercial 'super tweeters' I have seen have built in crossovers and attenuators, but connect in parallel to the main driver. Surely if you don't have a crossover on the full range speaker, at certain frequencies the amp would 'see' a very low impedance as you have the full range driver and tweeter both being driven by the amp. My LM amp runs my 4 ohm speakers fine, but if I added an 8 ohm tweeter, at certain frequencies when the crossover allows the signal to the tweeter, the amp would see both speakers in parallel.

I know the impedance of the speakers change at different frequencies, but is it safe to just add a tweeter crossed at say 6K Hz, or should I build a crossover for both?

I have to answer "it depends" First, remember the full range impedance raises quickly at higher frequencies. All that copper in the voice coil you know. I am sure the OEM can provide you a plot that shows this.

You did not describe your full ranges or if they have a Zobel or other compensation networks, as that can change everything. In other words, safety wise, I agree with sofa, you should be fine. But, you are not adding an 8 Ohm tweeter, but a variable impedance that does not dip too far below 8 with some crossover that may or may not raise the impedance. You are actually asking a very complicated question for us to be exact in our answer.

Say, the tweeter has an L-pad on it. Now you ARE putting an 8 ohm load across the entire frequency range, unless the pad is inside the crossover. It depends. Just adding a tweeter without a complete two way crossover only gives half the advantage the tweeter could provide and may be very difficult to integrate.

All drivers have breakup modes. A full range may actually "use" the breakup to give the impression of extended highs so you only need a little "air" on top.

But, if you added a complete crossover, you can reduce that distortion and get the highs too while making the integration easier. Just adding the tweeter may give you ugly peaks where the full range is breaking up the worst causing difficulty in overall balance. Now I know, the full range camp is very proud of not having nasty filters in the critical range to mess up their sound. I fully understand that argument.

I offer the suggestion that crossing over above 5K with a not very steep crossover provides some help on the full range breakup and will be very easy on the tweeter and easier to integrate satisfactory. Of course, now we will have moved you into the "wide range mid" multi-way camp. Even if you XOed an 8 ohm tweeter or a tweeter with an 8 ohm L-Pad you would have impedance on the order of 4 ohms.

Anyway, at 10KHz, the impedance of the EL70s is about 6 ohms and climbing, so I suppose a simple cap on the tweeter wouldn't stress the amp too much. FH3 been shown to work with a wide variety of drivers. More are being encouraged. With Fostex doing a complete revision of their popular full-ranges, most of the Spawn of Frugel-Horn became obsolete. Horns are typically more complex to build, and are not without other problems, but a well-executed BLH can be a real aid to enjoying the music -- and in the end that is what it is all about. All of these will be supported by well developed plans some still a work in progress and links to community discussions on these specific designs.

The Jordan Eikona has caught my eye. Now the transmission line cab is overall pretty small plans herebut I would like narrow as well High WAF basically as narrow as poss.

I found this calculatorwhich accepts the numbers, but anyone out there have an opinion as to any cons in being a narrow cab? Have you looked at the Frugal horns? Think there is even a couple of places in the UK offering kits. That Jordan cabinet is quite a well established design, no real issues with a shallow cabinet other than you may get more sound reflected back through the cone rather than dissipating inside the cabinet, although this can be helped with dampening.

The wider design from the front, helps with lowering the amount of Baffle Step Correction you would need top apply, although that less of an issue if you have the speaker up against a rear wall. Unless you are really going in deep with DIY, I would suggest sticking to an established design such as the Jordan designs, or as mentioned the Frugalhorns too. I was hoping to have the speakers pretty near a back wall due to very small room, so that's a plus.

I've messed around with Lowther single driver horn loaded designs on and off over the years, and have concluded that you really have to augment the bass somehow, either by adding a sub or creating a two-way design. Yes, you can get there if you build a big enough horn, but that absolutely doesn't sit well with domestic acceptability. Very satisfying when you are no longer straining your ears to hear the bass notes.

They were very 'nice' indeed on classical music, and light jazz, which is all we ever played on them. Didn't go very loud, but 'nice'. The Mark audio drivers I sell go much lower than the lowther type drivers and they have much more excursion and a Q that works in slightly smaller boxes. No need to compromise the bass unless you want loud sub bass A frugel horn does the best here but does still have a large footprint.

A Pensil 11 flat pack is a good compromise here. Bass a plenty for most folk. It's basically a midbass driver that does wideband stuff. Above are my DIY ones. The retro 60s styling might not be to everyones taste, but the missus loves them, simply because they only produce extended bass, when backed right up to the wall.

As we can see above, she's placed vases and lamps on the top of them; a sure sign of approval. I like the ornament on the LHS cabinet. That's about as near as I'll ever get to an amp.
